Hama-rikyu Gardens

浜離宮恩賜庭園

Located just a five-minute taxi ride (approx. 1.3 km) from the hotel, Hama-rikyu Gardens is a historic feudal lord’s garden that originated as a seaside villa built in 1654 by Matsudaira Tsunashige, who reclaimed land from the bay. It was later developed into an official villa of the Tokugawa shoguns.
Today, it is managed by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and offers visitors a peaceful escape from the city’s hustle and bustle, with its serene atmosphere and beautiful seasonal scenery.

浜離宮恩賜庭園

The garden’s most striking feature is the Shioiri-no-ike tidal pond, which draws seawater from Tokyo Bay. The surface of the water changes with the tide, revealing different moods and reflections depending on the time of day and season.
In the center of the pond stands O-tsutai-bashi, a wooden bridge that leads to the Nakajima-no-Ochaya teahouse on a small island. There, guests can enjoy a bowl of matcha green tea and seasonal Japanese sweets—especially lovely during the vibrant autumn foliage.
Throughout the grounds, you’ll find many historical highlights, including the famous Sanbyaku-nen no Matsu, a 300-year-old pine tree, and beautifully reconstructed teahouses.
The striking contrast between the traditional Japanese garden and the modern skyscrapers in the background makes this spot truly worthy of being called an oasis in the city.
