Sustainable Japanese Traditional Culture Experience “KINTSUGI”

Shiba Park Hotel

The “Sustinable Japanese traditional culture experiece” is an opportunity to experience traditional crafts and culture that have been nurtured by the bounty of nature and carefully passed down from generation to generation at Shiba Park Hotel. We sincerely welcome our guests to experience such a sustainable experience, where history and culture are passed down through the ages and lead to a better and richer tomorrow.

Using Shiba Park Hotel as a platform, we will provide a place to experience “learning,” “passing on,” and “preserving” Japanese traditional culture from generation to generation, thereby connecting the traditional culture that has been carefully handed down to the future.

simple KINTSUGI experience

”New beauty” created by taking good care of things
KINTSUGI Experience

KINTSUGI is a traditional Japanese restoration technique in which broken, chipped, cracked or otherwise damaged areas of ceramics and porcelain are glued together with lacquer and decorated with gold or other metal powder.
A “new beauty” is created by taking good care of objects that Japan has nurtured since ancient times. Guests can easily experience traditional KINTSUGI using simple modern repair techniques.
We have requested supervision from Kamakura-Bori Niyodo Mr. Kenyu Mitsuhashi, who is involved in various efforts to pass on the lacquerware culture to the next generation, and our hotel staff acquired KINTSUGI instructor certification.

Brass powder and substitute gold-etching powder will be used instead of gold powder. In addition, no real lacquer is used. Instead, synthetic lacquer (URUSHI), glue, and putty are used in this modern repair technique.

※Brass powder and substitute gold-etching powder are also called substitute gold powder that can be used for KINTSUGI. Brass powder may cause metal allergies in rare cases.
※Synthetic lacquer (URUSHI) is not guaranteed safe for tableware use.

flow of KINTSUGI experience

01

Begins

Meet with your KINTSUGI instructor at our Library Lounge on 1F and we excort you to the venue.

02

Observating

KINTSUGI experience begins. You will observe the characteristics of the ceramic coaster you will be repairing.

03

Patching-10 minutes

Pour equal amounts of each of the two adhesive onto the work board and mix thoroughly with a wooden spatula.
Using the wooden spatula, apply as thin a layer of mixed adhesive as possible to the cracked area all over the section to be glued. Patch together the glued side and hold them tightly together.

04

Sharpening-10 minutes

After patching, shave off the overflowed adhesive with a box cutter, and then prepare the surface with sandpaper.

05

Painting-10 minutes

Once the shape and the even surface are complete, paint synthetic lacquer (URUSHI) to the joints as if tracing them. Be careful not to apply it too thickly.

06

Applying-10 minutes

Put gold powder on the brush and drop the powder over the area painted with synthetic lacquer (URUSHI.) Gently prepare the area sprinkled with gold powder with a cotton ball, and let it dry.

07

Completed - KINTSUGI experience is done

Place the coaster in the special wooden box and you are done. You can display them as a reminder or give them as a gift to a loved one.
