Hinamatsuri, celebrated annually on March 3, is a traditional Japanese festival held to pray for the healthy growth and happiness of girls.
To mark the occasion, at the Central Staircase was adorned with hina dolls and a display of tsurushi-bina—delicate hanging ornaments that bring festive charm to the season. The origins of tsurushi-bina trace back to the Edo period. In those days, hina dolls were luxury items, often beyond the reach of ordinary households. Yet every family shared the same heartfelt wish: “May this child grow up in good health and happiness.” Mothers, grandmothers, aunts, and even neighbors each stitched small cloth ornaments, which they gathered and hung together—a collective act said to be the beginning of the tsurushi-bina tradition.
Woven with the love of many, these ornaments were cherished as protective charms for children and carefully passed down through generations. Over time, what began as an alternative to hina dolls developed into rich local traditions—particularly in regions such as Izu Inatori (Shizuoka), Yanagawa (Fukuoka), and Sakata (Yamagata)—and eventually blossomed into a beloved custom celebrated across Japan.
This 2026 year, we present these tsurushi-bina alongside books—each a vessel of memories and stories. Ornaments that carry generations of hope. Books that carry stories through time.
We hope our lobby display gently conveys a spirit of continuity that bridges past and future. Please enjoy the world of Hinamatsuri, which quietly heralds the arrival of spring.
