Shiba district in Tokyo is a place where you can still feel the wind of Edo-era. Shiba Park Hotel is a good old hotel that has weaved its way through time in harmony with the traditions and culture of this area. Shiba Park Hotel is also a library hotel with a diverse collection of books. We hold an exhibition called “Tale of Artisans” which tell stories of traditions (tales) that they have developed and nurtured.

Copper-metal craft & Kasama ware

In the tale of artisans Vol.10 with the theme of “Mitsuru,” we introduce “Copper-metal craft” teapot that enriches your tea time and “Kasama ware” with gentle colors. These two crafts will fill your heart with a sense of happiness. Please enjoy yourself as long as time permits.

What is Copper-metal craft?

Metal working methods can be roughly divided into three categories: casting (chukin), in which metal is poured into a mold to make a product; forging(tankin), in which a single piece of metal is beaten into shape; and chiseling (chokin), in which cast metal or wrought metal is decorated. In the process of shaping, metals such as gold, silver, copper, and iron are beaten to increase their hardness and then softened by fire, repeating the process over and over. Copper-metal craft, a material with excellent thermal conductivity and heat capacity, is used in the copper forging process to further enhance its effectiveness.

Nagasawa Seisakusho Co.

Nagasawa Seisakusho, a forging workshop in Arakawa-ku, Tokyo for three generations, produces crafts mainly in copper and brass, but also in silver and aluminum. Toshihisa Nagasawa, the third generation of the company, has captured the hearts of many people with his craftsmanship that focuses on beauty and function.

What is Kasama ware?

The origin of Kasama ware is said to date back to the middle of the Edo period, when Kuno Hanemon from Hakoda village, which is in present-day Kasama City, began making ceramics under the guidance of Choemon, a Shigaraki ware. It was protected and encouraged by the clan until the Meiji era, when the Kasama clan was abolished due to the abolition of feudal Japan. The pottery still exists under the name of “Kuno Toen.” Today, many ceramic artists from Japan and abroad gather in Kasama City, and the area is attracting attention from various fields as a production center where creative styles flourish while inheriting traditions.

Restaurant The Dining’s afternoon tea features a variety of Japanese, Western, and Chinese artisans, each with their own specialties, served on a single stand.
Edo cuisine Hanasanshou presents a sweet of oranges cooked with honey and combined with milk jelly. From Chinese cuisine Peking, we prepared fried sesame dumpling with Sakura sweet paste and mango pudding just in time for spring. Western cuisine Primula offers new savories for spring as well.
